For: "Pamana Ng Pilipino (Legacy of the Filipino Nation)" Description of the award: The Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas recognize the achievements and significant contributions of Filipino individuals and organizations in the U.S. and abroad. Signed into law by the late President Corazon C. Aquino in 1991, the awards were also established to help celebrate the Month of Overseas Filipinos and International Migrants Day in December. The "Pamana Ng Pilipino" Presidential Award is given to "Filipinos, who, in exemplifying the talent and industry of the Filipino, have brought the country honor and recognition through excellence, dedication and distinction in the pursuit of their work and the advancement of their profession. Description of what the award was for: The President's official citation for Gener states: "His Excellency President Benigno S. Aquino III - in conferring the Pamana Ng Pilipino Presidential Award to Randy Gener - recognizes his excellence in the field of theater arts and creativity, and diligence in promoting Filipino-American cultural interests and accomplishments to mainstream audiences in Europe and the United States of America." For: National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association's Excellence in Journalism Awards Description of the award: Awarded by the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA). The NLGJA Journalist of the Year award recognizes the outstanding professional achievements of an LGBT journalist. Description of what the award was for: This year, NLGJA will present that honor to Randy Gener of American Theatre magazine, a writer, editor, critic, playwright and visual artist based in New York City . Of Gener, judges said: "Some of the best journalism is being done outside of traditional newsrooms and by people covering niche areas. Gener's writing on theater, especially as it interacts with LGBT lives, is beautifully done, knowledgeable and almost lyrical in its language." For: Description of the award: The Jacqueline Lemieux Prize is awarded annually to the most deserving applicant in the Canada Council Grants to Dance Professionals program. The prize is awarded in memory of Jacqueline Lemieux and her contribution to Canadian dance. Teacher and administrator, Ms. Lemieux co-founded with her husband, Lawrence Gradus, the Montreal dance company Entre-Six and the summer school Québec Été Danse in Lennoxville. Description of what the award was for: The committee said, "Mr. Szporer has made an outstanding contribution to dance in Canada through his sustained and active engagement in advancing the dance discourse both nationally and internationally. We note the dedication and generosity demonstrated by this respected dance scholar and filmmaker who has influenced and supported a new generation of dance artists and whose works have reached wide audiences at home and abroad."
